Guru Sahib presented with an expensive rug

While coming back from Arab countries, Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaaj passed Jaampur, Hanad, Faazalpur, Mirpur, Naushaira, Mithkot and arrived at towns of Shikarpur, Rukkan, Ladhkaana, Halaani and Bulaani. Here he sat under the huge tree of Bohd. A Julaaha (weaver) by the name of Dawood came to have darshan of Guru Sahib.

When Dawood arrived, Siri Guru jee was doing kirtan along with Bhai Mardana. Fortunate sangat was listening to the Amrit (nectar) baani of Siri Guru jee. After the bhog of kirtan, Dawood presented Siri Guru jee with an expensive Galeecha (rug) that he had woven with his own hands.

Siri Guru jee lovingly told Dawood that his galeecha (rug) was the soft green grass grown by Vaheguru and that he was unable to accept it. Another reason could have been the fact that Siri Guru jee used to travel all the time and it would have been impractical to carry the heavy rug where he went.

When Dawood insisted on Siri Guru jee to accept the rug, Siri Guru jee asked him to place this rug under the new born puppies who were trembled all night due to cold. Siri Guru jee had noticed that a bitch had given birth to puppies, a couple of nights before and since the weather was very cold at that time, the puppies had endured heavy cold and had trembled due to cold weather all night. The soft hearted Siri Guru jee was more worried about the well-being of the puppies than his own comfort.

Dawood, like a devoted Sikh that he had become, did as Siri Guru jee had said. He did not get offended like some of our modern Sikhs do if their gift is not highlighted in the Gurdwara Sahib.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh
