Battle with Hari Chand

This battle account is from the battle of Bhangaani fought between the armies of Guru Sahib and the hill chieftains. Siri Guru Gobind Singh jee Maharaaj has written some accounts of this battle in Bachitter Naatak baani of Dasam Granth. This particular pankiti refers to the incident, when Hari Chand, who was a mighty warrior, was able to hit Siri Guru jee with his arrow. Siri Guru jee was hit on one side and blood started coming out of the wound.

Siri Guru jee felt the arrow and came out in full Bir Rass.

Jabai Baan Laagiyo||
Tabai Ross Jaagiyo||
(As I was hit with the arrow of Hari Chand, I was filled with Bir Rass).

Hari Chand was slaughtering Siri Guru jee’s army. He was so skilled in bow and arrow that he was shooting multiple arrows at one time and each of his arrows hitting someone or the other. Many Singhs got martyred at his hands.

Finally Siri Guru jee decided to put an end to Hari Chand’s slaughtering of his army. Hari Chand too was keen to fight Siri Guru jee. They both came face to face and Siri Guru jee asked Hari Chand to shoot the first arrow. He shot Siri Guru jee but Guru Sahib stopped it. Then he shot the second one but that too missed Siri Guru jee. The third arrow did hit Siri Guru jee on the side of his stomach. At this point, Siri Guru jee was filled with Bir Rass. It is impossible to imagine the countenance of Siri Guru jee at that point. It is certain that it would have been impossible to look at Siri Guru jee’s face at that time.

It was now Siri Guru jee’s turn to shoot. Siri Guru jee noticed that Hari Chand was totally covered with armour and there was no part on his body where Siri Guru jee could hit. Then he noticed that there was a small opening near Hari Chand’s ear. Siri Guru jee aimed his arrow in such a way that it went in a circle and hit Hari Chand in his ear. Hari Chand attained martyrdom right there. Siri Guru jee has written that Hari Chand went straight to Baikunth (a place in Giyaan Khand where very good people reside).

Siri Guru jee was very skilled in the use of bow and arrow. It is said that Siri Guru jee even used Celestial weapons during his battles. Celestial weapons had not been used in India after the great battle of Mahabharata in Duaapar Yug. All the warriors who knew this knowledge perished in that battle. Few who were left failed to pass it on.

Siri Guru jee passed on 5 arrows with Celestial powers to Baba Banda Singh jee Bahadur and when Baba jee was losing battle of Sirhind, he invoked one arrow that brought massive destruction on the enemy side and tilted the success to the side of Khalsa army.
