Anand of Simran and True Bibek


Original Text: ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰਤ ਆਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੁ ॥ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥1॥

ਭਾਵ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਉਦਮ ਕਰਨ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਇਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰ ਸਾਰ ਸੁਖ (ਸਚੇ ਆਤਮ-ਆਨੰਦ) ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਅਤੇ, ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਏਹ ਤਤ ਸਾਰ ਆਤਮ-ਆਨੰਦੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਿਉਂ ਤਿਉਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਸ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਥਾਹ ਆਤਮ-ਆਨੰਦੀ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਅਤਿ ਉਚੀ ਬਿਵਸਥਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਕਮਾਲ ਦਸ਼ਾ ਦਾ ਤਤ ਸਾਰ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਹੈ। ਤਾਂਤੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਮੁਖ ਕਰਮੁ, ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਏਹੋ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ) ਰੂਪੀ ਤਤ ਕਮਾਈ ਸਾਰ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਹੈ। (Gurmat Bibek, page 12)

Humble Translation: There is Anand (spiritual bliss) even in the effort of Naam (Sifat-Salaah), and through Naam (Sifat-Salaah) alone, real Atam-Anand (spiritual bliss) is attained. And, as the attainment of this true Atam-Anand (spiritual bliss) increases, more and more Naam is chanted. And the attainment of extremely high spiritual state of Sifat Salaah imbued with Atam-Anand, attained this way (by chanting Naam), is called Pooran Bichaar (Perfect Notion or Perfect thought) i.e. Pure Bibek of great level or state. Therefore, the supreme Karma of Gursikhi is the earning of Naam and the pure earning of Naam (Sifat-Salaah) alone is Pure Gurmat Bibek.

Vichaar: Bhai Sahib in this passage has made it clear that the supreme Bibek and supreme Karma in Gursikhi is earning the true earnings of Naam i.e. chanting of Gurmat Naam. So great is this supreme Karma that even before reaching a high spiritual state, just in the effort of chanting of Naam, one gets Anand (spiritual bliss). As one gets Anand, one chants more Naam. This is how Naam bonds the seeker and eventually enables him to meet Vaheguru.

The second great spiritual notion contained in the above passage is that perfect thought or perfect notion is such spiritual state where Naam chanting becomes a pure spiritual bliss. All other complicated philosophies and notions provided by great thinkers, do not go beyond the Trai-Gunns of Maya. Only the spiritual state, attained through Gurmat Naam, enables one to rise above Trai-Gurnni Maya.

The third wonderful notion in this passage is that chanting of Gurmat Naam is supreme Gurmat Bibek. Naam Japna is supreme Bibek and without this Bibek, all other Bibeks combined too, cannot give salvation. All other Bibeks are mandatory as well, but they are aiding-Bibeks because they aid us to earn the supreme Bibek of Naam Simran.

From this Vichaar, one can safely deduce that to be a Bibeki Khalsa, one must chant Gurmat Naam with pooran Gurmat Vidhi i.e. Swaas Swaas Simran at Amritvela and continue chanting Naam all day long. One should realize that unless one gets Rass from Naam, one has not yet become a pure Gurmat Bibeki.
