Gurmat Daan Bibek - Giving Dasvandh is a Duty of a Gursikh

To give Dasvandh is a Duty of Bibeki Gursikh

(Gurmat Bibek page 120)

Humble Translation: To give Dasvandh out of earnings (honest earning) is a duty of a Sikh and in addition to this, whatever one can give out as charity is one's choice, there is no prohibition on this. But this Daan is done by Guru's Sikhs as per Guru's Hukam. As per Hukam, even if they have to sacrifice everything, they won't hesitate in doing so. Whatever a Guru's Sikh owns, is not his property. Whatever he possesses, is the property of Guru and there is no claim on this property by the Sikh. So there is no attachment or pride in whatever charity and good deeds the Guru's Singhs (Bibekis) do. Bibeki Singhs don't have even the most subtle pride that they have done such and such charity or such and such good deed.

Vichaar: Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee has very diligently presented the lofty ideals of Gurmat Bibek involving Dasvandh and Daan (Charity). The reason why Gursikhs don't feel pride in giving Dasvandh is because Gursikhs know that Dasvandh was not their possession to begin with. Dasvandh belongs to Guru Sahib and thus how can we feel pride by giving back to Guru Sahib, what belonged to Guru Sahib to begin with?

Second important Vichaar that Bhai Sahib has presented is that Gursikhs give Dasvandh not to earn any Punn or with the expectation of a reward for a good deed but because it's the Hukam of Guru Sahib to give Dasvandh. Giving charity is considered to be a very important good Karma by many religions and this Karma of charity is considered to be one that can earn one even salvation but Gurmat preaches that true salvation and emancipation comes from Naam only. All the good Karma that Gursikhs do, are out of Hukam of Guru Sahib without considering these good deeds to be source of salvation.

In the following days, more passages from Bhai Sahib's writings on Gurmat Daan Bibek will be covered.

Bhul chuk dee Maafi jee.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh
